Happy Feet December 1, 2008 James Ellsworth (Caldwell, TX) I am "over fifty" and twenty pounds overweight plus I have a higher arch than is desirable. My feet take a "pounding" so I am very willing to pay a premium price for comfortable shoes. The MBT shoes resolve my problems in several ways: the metatarsal pad in the sole offers flexible support over a larger area than even my prescription orthotics did, the "masai bag" offers amazing shock absorbtion with every step and the "extreme" rocker sole shape has my feet rolling from heel to toe in a natural way that mimics the exercises that my podiatrist suggested that I do. The toe box is also large enough for my forefoot to spread naturally for better forward balance.
I now have twenty miles of "road work" walking in these shoes and they continue to be very comfortable. Even in my usual Mephisto walking shoes I could only tolerate two miles of walking on an every day basis but with my Tarikis I can do three miles and my feet truly feel as "fresh" at the end as they did at the start. Surprisingly, I also feel the difference in the work being done by the muscle groups mentioned in the company's technical literature: my waist is a bit trimmer and my butt and upper thighs are working like never before. Possibly I am burning more calories because I have been wearing the shoes indoors as well and the rocker sole invites one to spontaneously rock back and forth on ones feet while standing at a counter cooking (I do that a lot.)
I first saw these shoes in a Lee Herrington "Enthusiast" catalog but did not buy them because they did not seem to be designed for daily wear and the Swiss Masai promotional literature seemed to suggest that one would constantly be wobbling in search of some elusive balance point. This is not the case and the shoes are easy to stand on right from the box. You induce the wobble by "heeling and toe-ing" during normal walking motions or by voluntarily rocking back and forth as mentioned above. Lateral (side to side) stability in the shoes is excellent so I have no concerns about rolling an ankle as I walk.
For me the functionality of the shoe is the big news but they are also well-made and strongly constructed without being heavy on my feet. The style is "dressy casual" in the brown leather and while the sole is significantly thicker under the arch (remember the "rocker")it is much thinner in the heel. One result is that you stand about a half inch taller than when you are barefoot or are wearing standard shoes. I recommend these shoes very highly for every day walking and for active travel.
